Angela Davis Speech

Angela Davis Speech

Though I had to leave at 1:45 due to my next class starting at 2:00, Angela Davis talk was truly interesting and inspiring for time I was able to stay for. I wish I was able to stay longer and felt rude leaving but I had no choice. Davis’ speech focused heavily on her desire for equal rights and opportunities for all as she quoted some of her favorite passages from other speeches and books. Angela toward the beginning spoke of how she cherishes the ability to boycott states and legislatures in the fight for what she believed to be the greater good. She spoke a little for the time I was there about her desire for the fruits of the Earth to be spread equally in order for all on the planet to be happy and sustained. Toward the time I had to leave she began to speak about the rights of black individuals, in particular women. She spoke of how proud she was for the newly rising representation of women in places such as rights movements and government positions. She also touched upon the fact the The United States original plan for equality was stretched far more thin than the paper claimed as she believed it was only beneficial to “affluent white males”.

Some of the things she spoke of that stuck with me the most revolved around her past especially her childhood and her time in prison. Her childhood sounded truly horrible due to the racism she and her family had to deal with on a daily basis. I felt very bad for her and those that grew up in that time period and saw it as a possible reason why she desired to join the communist party, as it would theoretically right those wrongs she dealt with. The other thing that stuck with me was the mentioning of her 18 months in prison and her placement on the FBI’s top 10 most wanted list. This made me wonder exactly what she did to get onto this list and how this affected her attitude about the United States after she was taken off. She may have gone into more detail about that after I left, but sadly I had to go.
